two things I want to talk about:

  • the act of creation as a bowel movement

  • social rituals

topic 1

Topologically speaking, making creating art and pooping are the same thing.

Hear me out.

In both cases, you experience a visceral sensation where something rumbling inside you, and it’s going to escape your body in some way, shape, or form.

With bowels, this sensation is obvious. And can come in many varieties.

Art is no different. I often feel an idea bubbling up from somewhere inside my being, and I have to rush to find somewhere — a notepad, my notes app, a .txt file, or maybe, dare I say, a blog — where I release this idea like a mass of aether. Once finished I tidy up some details, and either cast it on my already crammed desk or post it somewhere on the internet.

Also, like bowels, art is a digestive process, typically stemming from a diet high in Culture. what you put in is what you get out, and certain conditions and techniques lend themselves to a higher quality, cleaner experience.

topic 2

it’s valentine’s day so obviously I’m going to make some comments about it. duh. I have to. I’m obligated to as a commander of cultural discourse.

my comment is this: when people say, “I don’t care to participate in this social ritual”, this is pick-me behavior. Women do it with valentine’s day. Men do it with their birthday. Atheists and Commies do it with Christmas. It’s all just signaling. We’re all just trying to signal to our in-group “hey it’s actually super chill haha I’m just a super chill person down for whatever”. We don’t actually have to do this.

There’s nothing wrong with participating in social rituals because it gives you an easy — and I mean a wide-open layup kind of easy — shot at showing people you care about them and their well-being. it’s a free day to demonstrate your adoration for person’s existence. and people want to be adored, man, holy smokes do they want to be adored. there’s nothing wrong with that. super normal, really. we want to be cared about. the only real thing to worry about is the methodology. like art and bowels above, there are ways to make elevate the experience. just put a little thought — some attention and intent — into things.
